Many music lovers for sure know the institution “Noise in the North”, located in the Groningen lovely pearl, the club Lola. From many ongoing concerts I at least I enjoyed a few really great concerts, like with Nelson Graf Reis and his band "We Bless This Mess" for example.
On 28th of May this year, which is 2019, I had the great pleasure to meet “The SoapGirls” from South Africa. These months they are touring through Europe and for sure they washed me with all their soap, charme, wildness and fantastic show! “The SoapGirls” are MIE aka Noemie Debray on guitar, vocals and anything you might want to think about. And MILLIE aka Camille Debray on bass, vocals and just check yourself!
Both girls, better I should say women, are sisters, born in France and raised in South Africa, where they still live, except when they are touring of course. If today's society and the world's depression and ignorance make you feel lost, then for sure you should try the music of “The SoapGirls” or better: The Soap Girls and their music! Somehow they present themselves like beings from another galaxy, but in my idea it's just the spirit of the Cape of Good Hope both “Girls” transfer to us! Because we ALL need Good Hope! Mie and Millie's energy, rawness and authenticity is the best in a live concert. This is why they tour almost constantly and generated a dedicated group of followers known as “The SoapSuds”, who follow the band across the UK and Europe.
We can describe their music as punk related Rock and Roll, noisy indie, grunge but ethically based in punk. And not to forget, these women are hot in any way and very especially their show! These sisters did already perform on the street, when they were 8 and 9 years old, helping their mom selling hand made soap for various charity causes and they did this 365 days of the year for 9 years. Somehow their success is genetic, they released their first album in the age of 15 and 16 at Universal Records with
“raw, catchy, anarchistic Rock and Roll”.
The SoapGirls are kind of a huge mixture of Sun Ra and the early Frank Zappa with the Mothers of Invention. But because they are from Cape Town and from NOW, they work exactly with this spirit, standing for freedom and non-judgement and now I need to repeat myself: GO AND JOIN THEIR CONCERTS! I had the big pleasure to meet and talk with “The Soap Girls”, just half an hour before their show, in Groningen, the Netherlands, May 28th – 2019! Just enjoy!
Many thanks to Sam Ogden (their UK drummer), Sam Debray (their mom and manager), to everyone at Lola050, to Moos D Stone and Steven van Calcar (Noise in the North) and last but not least & forever to MIE aka Noemie Debray and MILLIE aka Camille Debray! We had a blast!
