This years edition of the ZomerJazzFietsTour presented a selection of international top drummers, such as Louis Moholo-Moholo, Gerry Hemingway, Michael Vatcher, Han Bennink, Victor de Boo, Aleksandar Skoric, George Hadow and Paal Nilssen-Love. I had the huge pleasure and honor to speak with two of them in Garnwerd, close to the so-called Headquarter of this very special and unique festival. After my interview with Paal Nilssen-Love (NO) I met Michael Vatcher (US) after his concert with Joke Lanz.
Michael Vatcher, born in California, re-residing in Amsterdam from now on after a two-years New York stay, played with groups such as Trio Braam De Joode Vatcher, the Tristan Honsinger Sextet, the Maarten Altena Ensemble, John Zorn, Zeena Parkins, Marty Krystall, Mathilde Santing, Simon Nabatov, Jan Klare, Evan Parker, The Ex, Roof (with Phil Minton, Tom Cora and Luc Ex), Michael Moore, All Ellington, Available Jelly, Wilbert de Joode, Gene Carl, Ernst Reijseger, Franky Douglas and Misha Mengelberg. His teachers are Joey Barron and the George Marsh “Inner Drummer” universe. He has a love for Craig Taborn's music, the Ellington book, Bob Dylan, Charles Ives, Captain Beefheart, tap dance, is dj-ing, singing, building and creating instruments and is a regular accompanist for the School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam (NL).
Please enjoy my almost one-hour talk with Michael Vatcher I had in the beautiful livingroom of Suzanne Rohde & John Dohle in Garnwerd, downtown, on saturday August 31 – 2019.
Many thanks to Michael Vatcher, Marcel Roelofs, Maria Palomeque & Siebelt Süßmilch! Special thanks to Suzanne Rohde and John Dohle for welcoming me, my crew and my interview partner in their beautiful home. And special thanks also to everyone at the ZomerJazzFietsTour 2019! You are all awesome!
