This year's Zomer Jazz Fiets Tour (ZJFT) (Summer Jazz Bike Tour) had a very special introduction night at the Vera music club in Groningen, the Netherlands, just called Proloog. The night before the festival started, especially this year's proloog was a Hommage to the “Atelier Il Sole in Cantina”.
In more than 20 years the “Atelier” presented new and often experimental music from international and local musicians and bands, that always had and still have a very clear impact. "Kuhn Fu" is such a band. While Christian Kühn and his band still studied at the Prins Claus Conservatorium (PCC) in Groningen, they presented their work often at the basement club “Atelier”.
Founded in 2012, "Kuhn Fu" is a heavy touring band presenting music that could be described as a post romantic jazz/rock disorder. Somehow. With their third album “Chain The Snake” (2019) "Kuhn Fu" very clearly stands up highly in the waves of European jazz, as a band reflecting cultural exchange in their music all the time. "Kuhn Fu" with their band members from Israel (Ziv Taubenfeld – best bass clarinet), from Turkey (Esat Ekincioglu – best double bass), from Great Britain (George Hadow – best drums) and from Germany (Christian Kühn – best guitar & best composing) is a radical, powerful, lyrical, extraordinaire energy club (The Groningen Report) you shouldn't miss at all. At this years' ZJFT they presented for the first time a program included an opera, featuring a special guest on the best tenor- and baritone saxophone, the legendary free jazz energy groover (The Groningen Report) John Dikeman (US).
John Dikeman follows his gods Albert Ayler and John Coltrane in the most radical and free improvised way. His energy is tiredless, he performs with other giants such as Joe McPhee, William Parker, Hamid Drake, Steve Noble, Aleksandar Skoric, Linda Sharrock and a new Amsterdam based project called Bacchanalia feat.: Jasper Stadhouders, Nicolas Chientaroli, Tristan Renfrow and Miguel Petruccelli. And nowadays he also performs regular with his "Kuhn Fu" brothers.
Please enjoy our talk in the Vera music club, 3 hours before their show started and only one hour before the very important dinner started!
Many thanks to Marcel Roelofs, Christian Kühn, Esat Ekincioglu, Ziv Taubenfeld, George Hadow, John Dikeman, Peter Weening, all the Vera staff and all the unbelievable amazing ZJFT staff! You are ALL awesome!
